IV. Heneral Luna- Movie making done right!

I hate history subjects, they make you memorize dates, people and events that happened in the past. Sure at times, it is fun and somehow amazing to know the things they did then for the freedom that we are experiencing now. Yes, we try our best to memorize the dates, people and events that happened, but we do not really understand the gravity of what they were fighting for. For the simple reason that we do not know how it feels to be oppressed, we do not know what it feels to be in a war, we are clueless.

And so with the progress of technology and continuous learning of people, mass media made the best Philippine history movie ever made. In the beginning of the movie it opened with a disclaimer, saying that although historical accuracy is important, we sometimes need to mix fiction with facts for us to arrive at the more important truths about our nation.

There are things that I realized after watching the movie:

1.) "Bayan o Sarili?" This line of General Luna during the movie when they were having a meeting on what they were going to do with the Americans, struck me. I've come to realize that ever since then Filipinos have always been compromising whatever they have because of the blind idolatry of Filipinos to  foreigners. Beuncamino and Paterno were willing to sit down, talk, and compromise with the American government because they believe that partnering with the Americans would stop the war and improve our economy. When in fact General Luna knew that they were only thinking about themselves, their businesses and their wealth. There are still a lot of modern day Buencamino's and Paterno's.

2.) "Ingles-inglesin mo ako sa bayan ko? Punyeta" I find it funny because it relates to us these days. When you go abroad or in non-english speaking countries, you will notice that people there does not understand english. You will have to learn their language. And in their countries they look down on foreigners unlike here in The Philippines where we continuously gratify foreigners and sometimes treat them with more respect than our fellowmen. Some kids these days were born here in the Philippines, does not have even a drop of foreign blood and yet does not even know how to speak Filipino. What on earth is happening to our country. Don't get me wrong on this one, I know that speaking in english would be a great edge when you start working and all. But these days, where we are already a free country, where we already have our own government, our own constitution the least that we can do to show our patriotism for our beloved Philippines is to learn and speak our language.

3.) "Kalaban ang kalaban, kalaman ang kakampi, nakakapagod" This is one of the best lines in the movie. In other words "crab mentality". We all want  to succeed and achieve, we all want to progress as a country but I really don't understand why is it when we see our fellow countrymen doing better than us, we look for mistakes in them. How can we progress as a country when we keep on pulling each other down? Shouldn't we just be proud for them? And General Luna is correct when he said that it is (nakakapagod) tiring. What is the point of doing your best and giving your heart out when your own race would bite you. tear you apart and then slowly chew you as if you do not come from the same race, from the same country, from the same home?

4.) "May mas malaki tayong kalaban kaysa sa mga Americano-ang ating mga sarili" I think that the situation that best explains this line is when Aguinaldo, Buencamino, Paterno and Mascardo started a plot to kill Luna. Amidst the war that is happening, amidst all the chaos, Aguinaldo had the time to plot a plan to kill General Luna. I blame Aguinaldo for not standing strong and firm in his decision to not kill Luna as he was his best general. But he let himself get carried and swayed by the words of threat of Buencamino, Paterno and Mascardo-people who have a deep hate of Luna. I really think that if Aguinaldo stood firm in his belief that Luna does not plan on stealing the presidency from him I think things would have turned out differently. No wonder our beloved Philippines is getting now where,  it's because from the very start our government started on the wrong foot. If then they were so hungry for power that they could kill their fellow men how much more now, now that after fifteen presidents? I wonder how many modern day Luna's were killed by modern day Aguinaldo's, How much blood should be shed in order for a president to stay in power?

5.) "Kung Panaginip lang ang umasa sa pag unlad, managinip na tayo hanggang sa kamtayan" This was the cry of the Filipinos then and this is still the cry of Filipinos now. During the war when people felt helpless and hopeless that we will never gain our freedom from our oppressors, now people are still hopeless that we will progress as a country, If I remember correctly this line was said by Joven, an imaginary actor or an actor that was introduce for the sake of the movie. But I believe that this is one of the strongest quote in the movie.

All these thoughts that I realized are realizations of an eighteen year old, This blog post was not written to offense, to misinterpret and to blame people. This blog post was written for the world to see how the movie has affected and eighteen year old and what are the realizations it gave me as a teen.
